Essential Oils for BABIES (and their Moms & Dads)

It’s 2008! A NEW year – new beginnings, a welcome opportunity begin anew, to renew, start or try something new and…what’s “newer” than wee, little babes?

Yes – with care – certain tried and true therapeutic-quality essential oils may be used safely and effectively on newborns, young babes, toddlers & small children.

This little Chinese toddler won me over instantly. Sweet attentive parents, were photographing him, too at the Sonoma Lavender and Wine Festival

There are wonderfully detailed books to use for guidance. You may wish to purchase several for your reference library. I’m of a grandmotherly age though without any grandchildren, yet! Still…I’ve chosen the following books for my personal library. You will find them listed in our Amazon Essential Books Store, too. (Search by author’s name to find them quickly.)
~ Aromatherapy and Massage For Mother and Baby, Allison England $14.95
~ Aromatherapy For Babies and Children, Shirley Price $16 (or less Used)
Shirley Price lists 20 essential oils for babies that are safe to use (with specific precautions).
~ Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Alan & Connie Higley $24.95 (10th edition)
~ The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy, Valerie Ann Worwood $19.95
Valerie Worwood suggests 15 essential oils for babies with a super chart on pg. 170 of her book that lists which EOs to use on newborns, 2-6 month olds, 6-12 months, 1-5 years old. Chapter 9 is devoted to babies & children.

Traditional essential oils for babies to comfort & relieve common issues are: German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Dill, Lavender, Mandarin, Neroli, Rose, Tangerine and Yarrow.

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), a gently healing therapeutic essential oil contains the strongest anti-inflammatory compounds of all essential oils.

General guidelines vary depending on the reference. The best approach is to be conservative, using LESS rather than more:
~ For newborns (but not premies, whose skin is too delicate) up to 1 year old:
Dilute 1 DROP essential oil (EOs) in 1-1/2 tablespoons of organic sweet ALMOND oil with 1 tablespoon JOJOBA oil
~ For babies older than 1 year, the blend can be a bit stronger:
Dilute 1-3 DROPS EOs with 1-2 tablespoons of the Almond-Jojoba blend suggested above.

The Higleys base their recommendations on a bolder approach, which they’ve used with great success on their own children:
~ Dilute 1-3 DROPS with 1 tablespoon of the Almond-Jojoba blend (mentioned above)

Essential Oils for “Saying Good-bye”

The past 14 months has been a time of transition with the deaths of my cousin Steve (NOV 2006) ; Steve’s father – my beloved Uncle John (FEB 2007), my hubby Bill’s sweet Uncle Jay (DEC 2007) and his Aunt Dot (AUG 2007), plus both parents of Bill’s high school friend (AUG 2007 & JAN 2008).

We’re preparing ourselves for the loss of our own parents…and one another. And processing our current losses in a variety of ways. One of which is to use essential oils for emotional support.

Bill’s friend called mid-afternoon 2-1/2 days ago, about 12hrs in advance of his mother’s death, asking Bill to come keep him company during the grief-laden wait for the inevitable. I suggested Bill take
